For students finishing their degree

You're about to graduate. Here's what happens next.

Most students leave varsity without knowing the basics of getting a job. This is the stuff nobody teaches you, compiled from what actually works in South Africa.

01 · Your documents

Get these ready first.

Before you apply anywhere, gather these. Most grad programmes will ask for at least three of them.

Certified copy of your ID
Get it certified at any police station or post office. Free. Do this before you need it.
Certified copy of your matric certificate
Same process. Some companies still ask for this even if you have a degree.
Your academic transcript
Request it from your faculty office. Takes 2 to 5 days. Order two copies.
SAQA verification (if applying abroad)
Only needed if you're applying to companies outside SA. Skip otherwise.
Tax number (SARS)
You'll need this to work anywhere. Register at sars.gov.za or your nearest branch.
Bank account in your name
Open a student account at Capitec, FNB, or Absa. Most are free under 25.
02 · Where to look

The sites that actually work.

Forget generic job boards. These are the ones that actually list SA graduate roles.

03 · Go straight to the source

Big SA companies hire on their own sites.

Grad programmes at these companies are usually not on job boards. Apply directly. Most close in October and November.

04 · The rules nobody tells you

Small things that change everything.

01
Apply within 48 hours of a job being posted
Recruiters shortlist as applications come in. Being early matters more than being perfect.
02
One page. Always.
Two-page CVs get ignored unless you have 10+ years of experience. You don't yet. One page.
03
Save your CV as "FirstName LastName CV.pdf"
Not "CV final v3.pdf". Not "mycv.pdf". Recruiters see the filename first.
04
Never send the same CV twice
Tailor it. Match the keywords in the job ad. This is what Thuto CV's checker does for you.
05
Use a professional email address
firstname.lastname@gmail.com. Not coolguy2004@. Not your nickname. Just your name.
06
LinkedIn matters more than you think
Fill it out fully. Add a real photo. Add your projects. Recruiters check it before interviews.
07
Follow up after 2 weeks
If you haven't heard back, send a short email. It shows interest. Most people don't do it.
08
Rejection is data, not failure
The average SA grad applies to 30 to 50 jobs before landing one. Expect it. Keep going.

You've got this.

Every other student is applying too. The ones who get the job are the ones who prepare. Start with your CV.
